Steve Celebrates Ten Years With Precision
March 19, 2007 marks Steve’s ten year anniversary with Precision. This is a milestone for Steve. He worked nine years for each of his two previous employers, where he held the positions of Set-Up and Supervisor. But after his ninth year of employment, both companies moved to China. He is happy to see that Precision remains in Chicago.
QUESTION: Steve, you’ve been in Set-Up for 28 years now, what do you like about this kind of work?
I like getting my hands dirty; I like working with tools and really getting into the machines. I am busy all day and the time really flies. I enjoy working with Nano in the Start Up and Troubleshooting of the lines. We don’t turn it over to the operators until everything is running smoothly.
QUESTION: Did you have any special training that made it easier for you to do this type of work?
I’ve had drafting classes and a lot of math classes.
QUESTION: What did you find different at Precision from your other Set-Up experiences?
The rectifiers scared me at first but I picked it up quickly. Luis trained me and I did get to work with Reno. I learned a lot from both of them.
QUESTION: When you think of your time at Precision, does anything stand out?
Yes, right after I started I was hosing down a module over a trench. Jim Belmonti walked by and asked me what I was doing. I told him “washing down this module”. A few minutes later, several supervisors came running over to me shouting to stop. That’s when I found out that I was washing gold down the drain! I never did that again and that is the first thing that I teach to new Set-Up people.
QUESTION: Tell us about your family.
I have two teenage children – Thomas, 19, and Heather, 16. Thomas is attending a trade school with hopes of becoming an auto mechanic. Heather attends Lane where she is a cross country champion; she has won many metals. Both of my children are handy like I am. My wife works later than I do so I do most of the cooking.
QUESTION: What do you like to cook?
I love to grill but I also make a good meatloaf!
QUESTION: What do you do in your free time?
I enjoy going to the movies and bowling. My wife and I like to play cards. My whole family likes to go to Wisconsin to this small town near the Dells. We go there often and would like to move there eventually.
QUESTION: You were chosen to be our employee of the month because of your excellent work ethic and attitude. What is your philosophy on working?
I like to get things going. I listen to my supervisor and do the job right the first time, even if it takes a little longer to set up. I am easy-going and I don’t complain. I make myself available to work overtime if Precision needs me.
